Maori tattoo designs!

I have this wall piece hanging up in my bedroom and it basically just reminded me of Maori tattoos so i decided to take a picture and put it on my blog as something so different can relate to tribalism.

This is a picture i found in a magazine advertising Revlon nail varnish. i though it made a great canvas to create a tattoo design inspired from the Maori tribes in New Zealand.

Hair and Makeup Tutorial

Tribal Hairstyle

Hair in progress! the two images above show how i have used fullers earth mixed with water and pasted it onto my hairstyle that i created which is basically lots of little bun made along the head to for a Mohawk. This represents the research i have been looking at so far and ideas i have started to think about for my final shoot.

Final step. apply aqua colour to dried fullers earth on hair. u can create different patterns on the hair with a brush.

Roberto Cavalli Spring/Summer 2011 collection

This is collection is based on the Amazonian Jungle..."Shredded cobweb dresses, sequin snake print, lace-up bootleg skinnies, waistcoats, tassels and beads hanging..." taken from the website: http://www.elleuk.com/catwalk/designer-a-z/roberto-cavalli/spring-summer-2011/review#image=1

I have chosen to look at this collection for make-up inspiration because it is very earthy and simple. Its all about the BEAUTIFUL SKIN and just highlighting the eyes and brows with a brown colour. I was to use simple and beautiful makeup for both my editorial and catwalk look.

Ashaninka Tribe

Thakoon a/w Collection 'Tribal Opulence'

An interpretation of a tribal look can be as simple as smokey red eyes!

I really like this look as its simple yet fiery, focusing on the eyes and leaving the rest of the face natural, something that i want to using in my final catwalk shoot.

Trial shoot

These images have been taken during the process of my makeup look to see if i need to enhance anything or add to my makeup look. After taking these photos i realised that the red on the eyes and cheeks needed to be made much darker as they were not coming out bright enough on the camera.

Also i think the black tattoo designs around the eyes need to be sharper to stand out more.
I think the whole look is nice however it is not perfect and all the aspects of the design are too much together and maybe need to be split into 2 designs. I think the black tattoo designs and the scarring effect would work much better on plain natural skin, therefore the tattooing and scarring would stand out more and be the main focus of the editorial look. Looking at these photos show that there is a lot going on in the photo and i don't really know where to put my eyes and focus on so the red could be used on it own as a separate look,

FINISHED DRAWING!!!

This is my first face template design i have create drawing inspirations from Maori Tribal tattooing as well as using African scarring techniques and creating the textures using lentils and lastly i have used red eye shadow on the cheeks and eyes which represents the Ashaninka tribe.

Voodooism

Voodooism is something i would quite like to get into in this project and explore more, however i have got so many other ideas rushing through my mind that i don't know if i will be able to incorporate it into my final looks, however i am really enjoying my research on the voodoo religion and what it is really about.

These are photos of voodooism from Haiti.
The second image is very expressive with this woman covered in mud throwing her arms around.
The first image shows the white eyes and how they practically roll back like in the Dub Phizixs video i posted earlier.

Practicing plaits in my Hair and Makeup tutorials!

For one of my final shoots either catwalk or editorial, i havnt yet decided, i want to include plaits in my final image to represent Native American women with their long hair with plaits.

La Belle Sauvage
Wild: Fashion Untaimed by The Metropolitan Museum of Arts.
I want to include the whole idea of a rush gatherer woman in my editorial shoot!

I love the meaning behind this portrait taken by Edward Curtis of an Arikara rush gatherer woman. The image portrays a 'Noble savage' which the 18th Century French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau 'perpetuated' was not however to the liking of  New World Colonists as in there eyes the Native Americans were savages because of the use of buckskin in clothing, however in the 60s this idea of using buckskin became popular with the hippies wanted to get back in touch with nature and this was there way of doing it.
Dub Phizixs and skeptical feat strategy - Marka
I love this song and music video and it just so happens to fit in well with my research and theme of my project. From the Feathers in the hair Representing Native Americans to the paint all over the face and also the White eyes which indicates Voodooism, another area i am interested in for this project not just the the religion but using white contacts in my final shoot to reference the culture of voodoo.
I love the tattoo on the body in this image. all the delicate lines and swirls a very detailed and i would like to do something like this on my model for my final outcome of this project.

Kimiko Yoshida

I found this image of very detailed scarification online and it instantly reminded me of Kimiko Yoshida's artwork. The idea of creating a detailed design of scarification on the body and face with the inspiration of Kimiko Yoshida has been considered but i'm still looking at other options and want to further my research before i reach and final conclusions for my final designs. This photo actually makes me feel a bit feeble as it looks so painful with all the raw flesh and blood dripping down the back, but it is a pretty amazing design.

Face Templates

Practicing designs on models in the pages of magazines inspired from Dulong women and their facial tattoos.

Another beautiful image of a Dulong woman.

AVATAR

This reminds me of the tattooing of tribes but instead a much more delicate design as it blends into the skin and also the little white dots on the skin are like Aboriginal dot painting or look similar to the Dulong womens tattooing on the face, in the same area of the face.

Love Lockdown by Kanye West.
This video has a lot of great tribal looks going on, from feathers in the hair to straw around the body and amazing hair references to African Tribes.

i think the hair in this photo is really interesting. it looks like dreadlocks that have been coated in some sort of clay or mud which is a really rich earthy colour.

This photo is beautiful. I love the detail of the dots on the face and is very relevant to Aboriginal art.

Apocalypto (Movie)

Rodarte Spring 2010!

This collection is other worldly and is truely inspiring to the eye. The strips of leather and burnt bits of fabric really show the strength of a tribal worrior woman. The models have been made up in simple makeup but have very dark black and red lips and also have beautiful tribal tattoos going up their arms. These are the sort of tattoos i want to focus on for my final look but instead of the tattoos being on the arms i wants to design tattoos for the face and neck with a very simple base and eye makeup.
