TRIBES

La Belle Sauvage
Wild: Fashion Untaimed by The Metropolitan Museum of Arts.

Plaits remind me of the Rodarte hairstyle in the tribal catwalk look. Even though this is just a plait, it is very bold and i wanted to reference plaits in my final look giving slight hints of Native American women and their plaits but also how they were rush gatheres aswell which is why i am showing this image of a rush gatherer again as i love the story and meaning of the photo.

Native American Woodland Tribes

I am currently ready this book called 'Worldwide History of Dress' and i came along this image, whilst reading about the Woodland tribes, of a heavily fringed Mandan or also know as a Hidatsa mans shirt with red and blue paint down the middle. I think this is a beautifully detailed  piece of clothing and i like all the tassels hanging down from the sides of it. overall it is a very unique item of clothing which is why i had to put it up on my blog as it is so eye catching.

The Western Great Lakes

The Plains Tribes

There are so many different kinds of American tribes from different parts of america but which one to focus on...? I found this book in the library called, 'The Worldwide History Of Dress' and goes through all the different tribes in america, however i find myself more interested in the woodland and plain tribes. I am attracted to the images of how they dress and all the tassels and feathers on the clothing and in the hair also.

Face Templates!

This face template is inspired by the Dulong Women where they tattoo these amazing designs onto their faces. The story behind these tattoos are very important to know about as these tattoos are not just put onto the face to make the women prettier but to make them less attractive to prevent the women from being captured and taken as slaves and from being harmed by men from neighboring groups.

Instead of creating a design in the center if the face as shown in the photo below, i have taken the designs and interpreted them in my own way and drawn tattoo like designs on and around the eyes. I also thought it would be interesting to see what the tattoos would look like on the lips and so the design above is what i have come up with, however i do not know if the eyes and lips are too much together and should maybe be done as two separate looks.

These two photos are from a book which i have previously referenced in my blog called Colour full pain by Walter Kehr. This is one tattoo but a very effective one on its own. i want to create Maori inspired tattoos on my models body, more so on the face a chest and then use scarification on my models arm but using very simple designs.

This is a more extreem tattoo which covers the whole body but as i want to use scars on my model, to many tattoos will be to complicated.

Catwalk Makeup

Roberto Cavalli spring/summer 2011 collection

This makeup is simple yet extremely beautiful showing clear healthy glowing looking skin. The eyes are the main focus in the makeup which is what i want to focus on in my catwalk look, maybe not so much the eyes but the eyebrows in my final look. I am going to use this image as part of my inspiration for my final photo shoot referencing the beautiful clear glowing skin and then really focusing on the eyebrows making them dark and feather like.

!!!Catwalk Garment in progress!!!

I have started by taking a strapless bra i no longer wear and sewing on the black beaded tassels lower down on the bra nearer the bottom as they are going to be underneath the golden feathers which i have sewn on the first layer but still need to sew the second layer which will be the top and final layer on the bra.

No Doubt- Looking Hot

I was on youtube and came across this video and decided to watch it as i saw feathers in the picture. shows a modern interpretation of Native American Hair and Makeup.

Rihanna- Disturbia

This is one of my favorite music videos that Rihanna has made. It has a lot of tribal references from the scene where she has a feather head piece to the scene where she has white eye which relate to voodooism and also where she has black makeup all around her eyes. Its not over the top but the message still shows through the makeup which has been done in such a thoughtful way that it gives hints across to the viewer. There are also moment in the video where she has smudges of dirt across her face and body so the makeup doesnt have to be so extreem to show the tribal hair and makeup.

Die Antwoord- Fatty Boom Boom

This is a FANTASTIC video as it contain many references to tribal culture in the hair and makeup but also refers to Voodooism which is a direction i would like to take my project into.

More Beautiful Photos of scarification that i came across on Tumblr.com

These dots created in scarification are really what i want to incorporate into my editorial look as i think they are really beautiful looking and also look quite delicate on the skin i think, whereas other types of scarification look more harsh and maybe a little scary.
To create this dotted effect i am going to use yellow lentils as they are flat on one side and seem to be slightly smaller than green or red lentils.

Modern day scarification!

These two photos a very detailed example of scarification and are very beautiful to look at. I found these photos of scarification via Google and i literally fell in-love with them for their complexity and beauty. They make me want to go and get the same thing done on myself as i could almost sit here all day and trace up and down each line and swirl in this design, however i have a lot of work to get on with so best not.

I found this picture of a model in a magazine and thought it was a simple clean photo of a face that designs can be drawn on so i created this design inspired from tribal scarring and Maori tribal tattoos and mixed them together. i used lentils for the scarring to create a textured surface around the eyebrows and chin. i think on a real persons face once the lentils have been covered to match the skin colour of the model this design will be very effective.

Experimenting with lentils and rice to create scarring effect

Jean-Luc Moerman
The work of this artist is simply amazing and is also very relevant to Maori tribal tattooing. Jean-Luc has given his tattoo like designs a modern touch.

Hair and Makeup Tutorial

Tribal Hairstyle

To create these balls in the hair i used polystyrene balls and then after placing each one in the hair tie a hairband up and then put another ball in the hair. is lightweight and effective for creating hairstyles.
the next step of my hairstyle was to take the other half of hair and then split in two sections and plait it and pin up to the centre of the head.
I then used red crepe hair and wrapped it around the hairstyle and then decided to add a bit into the plaits to see what it would look like.
